Holistic Physiotherapy
and Yoga Therapy
for Performing Artists

Dear performing artist friend,

Pain affecting our ability to create our art can be incredibly distressing. It sometimes emerges when we have been working on particularly demanding repertoire or rehearsing and performing long hours. But it can also emerge seemingly out of nowhere, or in response to some non-art-related activity, before asserting itself as something capable of compromising our comfort and ability to perform, and even our sense of identity and ability to do what we love (let alone earn an income).

If you are experiencing performance-related pain, you’ve likely considered getting it looked at by a medical professional or body worker of some sort, maybe even by a physiotherapist. At the very least, you’ve probably been told you should by more than one well-meaning soul.

Yet something about the mechanical approach that you expect (or have experienced before if you’ve already tried) may be out of keeping with the way you see the world. You may even feel you will be treated more as a broken machine in need of fixing than a whole person. Or told you simply have to stop playing or singing.

But it need not be this way.

  • I believe that working to address physical pain is a collaborative process that can be both creative and validating.
  • I believe that there are countless ways of supporting your body that could shift or eradicate your symptoms.
  • And I believe that you hold key knowledge about what will help you the most.

I’m Linnea. I’m a certifying yoga therapist and licenced physiotherapist in Toronto providing in-person and online services to support musicians, dancers, and other performing artists.

Before becoming a physiotherapist, I completed a doctorate in violin performance, during which I researched ways of incorporating health promotion in music education. For the last 8 years, I’ve taught a health promotion course to music students, and am now focusing on providing holistic care for performing artists struggling with physical symptoms.

My Approach

My goal is to provide clients with the following:

  • Resources and practices that can be used immediately for greater comfort and to facilitate healing;
  • Key knowledge of factors that can contribute to the development of performance-related pain and ways to mitigate known risks;
  • Increased self-awareness and confidence following the body’s cues; and
  • A toolbox of resources and practices that can be used to support well-being on a day-to-day basis, as well as tools for when things begin to go off the rails.

I aim to provide all this within a compassionate therapeutic relationship that includes you as an active participant in your care, so that we can find the supports most impactful for you.

I provide these elements within the context of physiotherapy and yoga therapy (certifying) appointments. (Unfamiliar with yoga therapy? You’re not alone. Click here for more information. In short, it’s a holistic form of therapy – you might think of it as a bridge between physiotherapy and psychotherapy – that uses yoga practices like movement, breathing practices, mindfulness, and meditation in a compassionate therapeutic environment to tend to human struggle or suffering.)

Is this for me?

If you’re still trying to tease out whether or not this might be a good fit for you, here are some additional ideas to consider, based on patterns I’ve noticed amongst clients who get the most out of working with me.

This might be a good fit if...

  • You are experiencing pain or physical symptoms that are interfering with your ability to create art at the level you are accustomed to, or with the enjoyment you seek;
  • You are interested in working collaboratively with a health care practitioner where you can share your experiences and perspectives;
  • You feel you “should” be doing something (or many things, or more things) to support your well-being, but are struggling to translate this into action;
  • You would like to expand your resources of caring for yourself.

This could be a particularly great fit if...

  • You are looking for a compassionate approach to health care that doesn’t label part of you as being insufficient (or broken, or wrong) in some way;
  • You are feeling drawn to developing your ability to notice and trust your body.

This is unlikely to be a good fit if...

  • You are uncomfortable with the idea of yoga-based practices (mindful movement, breathing practices, meditation, self-compassion, etc. tend to appear in both my yoga therapy sessions as well as physiotherapy sessions, as relevant);
  • You don’t have an hour of unclaimed time in your week to be in sessions (depending on what changes you are seeking, it may be helpful to start with a couple of appointments every other week, if not weekly);

Still unsure?
